I am a certified Master Black Belt at GE. I have certified more than Hundred GB’s and mentored 50+ BB’s while at GE and AirAsia.
Lean brings power of identifying “Muda” in a process and shows ways to reduce “Muda” using TIMWOOD (Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting time, Over production, Over processing, Defects) and behavioral.
Six sigma brings the understanding of variation through data analytics and suggests way to reduce variation, identify causes to your problem and solve.
Unfortunately Lean doesn’t tell you how to come with powerful ways to eliminate Muda and six-sigma doesn’t tell you how to solve technical problems. A combination of Lean and six sigma is known as one of the best operational excellence practices adopted in Indian industry like cycle time reduction, Touch time reduction, variation reduction etc., In TRIZ level 2, you learn TRIZ for technology processes, we talk about a higher order usage of TRIZ that is adopted in manufacturing units to bring predictability along 5 Axis of technical Innovation, mentioned above.
As Master Black belt, I did a study of an Lean Action workout vs. TRIZ for Technological process. One of my Black belt lead an Lean action workout. It gave good results. Separately used the Lean action workout understanding and adopted TRIZ for technological process and interesting to note that TRIZ for technological process gave far superior system level solutions.

I am a DFSS practitioner. how can TRIZ benefit?
Design for Six sigma brings in the robustness of the product development or manufacturing. I did my DFSS Black belt in 2004-06. Presented my work to the Chief Engineer’s Office. interestingly, my experience in product development (from concept design to detailed design), during the conceptual design stage, the various design concepts are most often a small variant of the base design. While understanding the VoC to VoP, while doing QFD, one would identify conflicting requirements. The traditional approach is to do a trade off. TRIZ brings in phenomenal impact right from conceptual design to preliminary design to detailed design and takes the trade off’s and thus expands technology envelope. The best known companies in the world that embraced TRIZ like: GE, Hyundai, Samsung, etc., TRIZ was integrated into DFSS and the results were just outstanding.

Based on my 10+ years of experience in teaching and consulting in TRIZ and Technical Innovation, the below 5 types of problem disadvantages (I call them 5 AXIS of Technical Innovation) are the best.

Yes, Don’t expect to solve mother of all problems in a workshop. I will help you to bring boundaries to a problem that is important and workable.
Why should I come as a team?
- IP is for the Company and the drivers are its’ employees.
- The teams collective knowledge is much stronger than an Individual
- Based on my workshop experience, teams are those who benefited the most. I do have exceptional individuals who learnt.
Is mentoring required?
Participating in a workshop, doesn’t mean one would learn every thing. There are exceptions though. In general, while I drove an Operational Excellence program at AirAsia Berhad, my job was to work with leadership, identify areas for cost out, define actionable projects, impart lean six sigma learning, mentor teem, demonstrate results, sustain them and then only the benefits are credited to the program.
Majority of the TRIZ results from previous workshops are a function of mentoring post workshops.
In person or Skype mentoring?
- If a team of 5 members participate in a workshop, I would do three, 1 hour mentoring sessions at no cost. As we would have covered a large ground in the workshop, these sessions reinforce the learning and importantly, the baby steps would be stronger in the right direction of learning.
- I am open for in person mentoring, but this would have additional commercials.
- Mentoring is for projects that are worked in the workshop. If new problems, then there will be a commercial associated and time would be more.
In a open workshop, how can we discuss confidential information?
I do sign NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreements) with companies to maintain Intellectual Property and confidentiality.
If a team of 5 members come from one company, I would have a separate space for problem solving. In other words, the team would just interact with me only while hands-on working in the workshop.
Do I need to work in this workshop or is it a training session?
I don’t conduct training’s. This is a hands on problem solving workshop. Fact that it is a workshop, you expect half the time working on the problem that you bring to the workshop.
I learnt TRIZ from text book, but I don’t have practical application. can you help?
The text book TRIZ is called classical TRIZ. What is taught in the workshop is much evolved. TRIZ is not just the Matrix and Principles. It is much beyond. I spend two days in problem diagnostics and then we dwell on problem solving tools. One of the tool is Matrix and Principles.
At what conditions one won’t get results by learning TRIZ?
- Don’t come with a problem to solve
- Come with a dummy problem or not important technology problems, only to try if TRIZ works
- Try to boil the ocean (even after problem scoping happened), solve mother of all problems
- When no time bound results are expected
TRIZ is proven for the last 7 decades and many multinational and national companies adopted and significantly benefited from TRIZ
